2006 EBHQ Opportunity Quilts

This year, we have two exciting opportunity quilts. They will be on display starting December, 2005 at many local San Francisco Bay Area guild meetings. They will also be displayed at the Solano Stroll (September 11, 2005) in front of the New Pieces Quilt Store in Berkeley, Alden Lane Nursery and Garden Center (September 24-25) in Livermore, and at the Pacific International Quilt Festival (October 13-16) at the Santa Clara Convention Center.

The Dragon Fly quilt was designed and pieced by Ulli Hanley and quilted by New Pieces, Berkeley, CA. A few years ago, while visiting the DAR Museum in Washington, D.C., Ulli saw a quilt in this pattern, only made as a one-patch. On returning home, she pieced a quilt like it, then another, this time using a four-patch instead of the one-patch. She remembers finding the dragonfly fabric at New Pieces and knew right then and there that it would be the perfect candidate to use for the vertical strips. Then along comes the making of the raffle quilt, and lo and behold, four years later she came across a four yard remnant, and so there we are, the dragons are still flying. New Pieces Quilting Service machine quilted a beautiful overall pattern of leafy scallops, reflecting the dragonfly motif. It is 85" by 90". A more detailed image is available.

California Summer was designed, pieced, and quilted by Angie Woolman. Angie has been a quilting teacher for over 15 years, and loves to teach beginners about the fun world of quiltmaking, but also enjoys having advanced students in her color workshops. Mainly a "New Pieces" teacher, she continues to enjoy long-arm quilting for the store, but also lectures and teaches workshops for quilting guilds near and far.

This opportunity quilt is made from a very specific palette of colors which represent the golden hills of the Livermore Valley in the summer. The use of alternating colors of quilting thread was meant to give a subtle effect of a sunshine and shadow design. It is 83" by 83".

A detailed image of part of Angie Woolman's quilt is available.
