EBHQ Quilts for Africa
|
Status Reports:
Information
Over the past twenty years most of our 1000+/- quilts a year have been distributed here in the Bay Area in our established networks. In addition to our Children’s Quilts for the Bay Area we now have an opportunity to send some of our stitches of love and healing to the women and children of Africa. I would like to invite you all to participate in this effort during the next few years.
As you can imagine, in times of war it is very difficult to get supplies directly to those affected.

The two places where we will be able to place quilts will be the Heal Africa Hospital in Goma, Congo, and the Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda. The quilts for Heal Africa Hospital will be for women and girls undergoing surgical repair for fistulae from violent rape. The quilts for Mulago Hospital will be for children with HIV, malnutrition and other diseases, in wards where no bedding is provided. Both hospitals will be able to send us names, information and photos of the recipients so that we can be better connected. The quilts will be hand delivered four times a year by travelers from Global Strategies for HIV Prevention or First Presbyterian Church of Berkeley or sent DHL by Global Strategies along with medicines.

75 quilts have been sent to children in Uganda and 13 for the women in the Congo.
More will be sent soon.

Need:
These are women and children impoverished beyond poor. They have not seen something new and beautiful and their very own for a very long time, if ever. The region is mountainous (5000 ft) so the warmth of a quilt would be a real comfort.
Size:
-
Quilts for women in Goma: Approximately 60" x 72"
-
Quilts for children in Kampala: Approximately 44" x 55"
Materials:
Quilting weight cottons; machine quilted; separate binding attached by hand or machine; quality and workmanship for quilts you would have in your own home.
Labels:
A small label on the back with the quilter's name, city and state. This will help track them in Africa to send back information on the recipient.
Due date and delivery:
First due date is first week in January. Quilts will be collected in our usual Children’s Quilts spots and then taken to the collection center for delivery about 4X/year.
As always, please email or call me if you have questions.
And thank you for including these special women and children in your stitches of love and concern.
