April, 2008

  • Nance O'Banion
  • Saturday, April 26, — Cloth Books and the Creative Process (Supply List)
Combining found materials and cloth in an experimental setting; we will work to discover a meaningful narrative in the book format. Two sewn book structures utilizing cloth as a basis, a simple transfer technique, collage, rubber stamps, and more will all be a part of the game. Come ready to play. < /br>
Monday, April 28— Cloth Books and the Creative Process (Supply List)
Monday's work can be either a beginning or a continuation. Some of the processes and the concept will be the same as Saturday and yet the source materials will be different. So the workshop is open to both people who have had Saturday's class and to those who have not. All folks are welcome who want to explore creative problem solving and a unique kind of storytelling. Come on down! Music included.

May, 2008

  • Gabrielle Swain
  • Saturday, May 17 & Monday, May 19, — Leafing Out (Supply List)
In this two day workshop you will design your own quilt with a variety of leaf patterns provided by Gabrielle and/or combined with leaf designs of your choosing. The focus of this class is color and design; however, a variety of techniques will be covered. Reverse and direct applique, colored pencil and pen and ink are just a few of the techniques used in this class.

June, 2008

  • Lura Schwarz Smith
  • Saturday, June 28, — Inking your Fabric (Supply List)
Textile inks have a wonderful range of applications in quiltmaking. For both traditional and innovative uses, from the simplest shading of an appliqued leaf or petal to detailed color work on human faces, inks can enhance your work and add new, beautiful dimension to your quilts. Learn easy, effective shading and blending techniques in this workshop on a variety of subject matter, which will allow you to produce images of your choice. No prior art experience required, just come with an open mind and an "I can do it!" attitude. Simple, fun exercises on fabric, no sewing.
Monday, June 3— Traditonals transformed (Supply List)
Give an old favorite a new twist -- take a traditional block and tweak it. Learn to draft and piece distorted traditional blocks. Also learn a simple paperless freeform curved machine piecing technique which allows students to build abstract texture in their quilts. The sample quilt is totally machine pieced, including the machine-inset sphere. Class time will be mostly spent on learning to distort blocks and learning the patternless freeform piecing technique. This is free-wheeling rotary cutting fun for those ready to try working more freely without patterns.

August, 2008

  • Susan Shie
  • Saturday & Monday — August 23 & 25 (two day workshop) — Diary Paintings for quilts: airpen and markers (Supply List)
The workshop includes use of markers and airpen for drawing and writing, and brush-on fabric paint for coloring the painting. The group creates a long list of topics to select one from, as a majority vote, for each day of class, so the students all respond to the same idea, but from their own personal viewpoint. Rebels are free to work on a different theme from the group theme each day. The class is very free and open, with much sharing between students, me doing a lot of one-on-one teaching, and us discussing our work each day in show-and-tell format.
Emphasis in this class is on letting your intuitive creative energy flow out fresh, right onto the fabric, without judging it as right or wrong. We'll use sketchbooks to develop ideas, but not erasers or tracing paper.

September, 2008

  • Jeanette DiNicolis Meyer
  • Saturday, September 27, — Curves - Curved Piecing (Supply List)
Students will learn to “draw” shallow free motion curves directly onto fabric with a rotary cutter, without templates. Machine construction techniques will be demonstrated via a slide presentation and class demonstrations. Each student will begin a small quilt top in this one day class. The final class critique will focus on ideas for finishing details, from quilting to edges.
Monday, September 29, — Line Dancing - working with line (Supply List)
Textile artists use line in piecing, appliqué, surface stitchery, and quilting, and can use these techniques as tools for expression and meaning if they can use line well. In this workshop, we will approach line playfully using wire, pen and paper, fiber and thread, free motion sewing and fusible collage. You will learn more about how you make marks, and the way you make marks your own, knowledge that will help you use the design element of line to energize your next quilt.
