  Yes! Enthusiastic quilters have been meeting in person again at the Albany Church!

  Free Table: Bring fabric of any size to give away at the free table. Donated fabric must be clean and useable (no faded, stained, or smelly fabric, thanks). Scraps should be large enough for applique and piecing.

  Using glue or a sewing machine, explore the design possibilities of abstract or pictorial busy, bold and bodacious, large scale prints while making traditional blocks. Learn how to efficiently cut and piece blocks, then organize them so they sparkle. Continue using wild fabric for your back, binding and border.

Maria asks and answers the following questions with humor, facts, and personal anecdotes. What is Improv Quilting and where did it come from? Who are the contemporary Improv quilt artists? What makes their work improvisational? How can you cultivate improv practices in your own work? And finally, what does the popularity of improv quilt making mean for the larger quilt world.

  Abstraction: Freedom from representational qualities in art. Taking away or removing characteristics from something in order to reduce it to a set of essential characteristics.

  Abstract-a-licious: Freedom from pressure or the need to make it real. Removing fear and the need for perfection in order to enlarge the artists essential joy in creation.

  If you’ve looked with secret longing to the world of art quilts but don’t know where to start, this is the class for you. Lyric will gently guide you through a number of concrete exercises designed to help you create ideas for original abstract quilts.

  You will create numerous studies, starting points for creating a small art quilt top. Doodles will be scribbled, eyes and minds will be opened, and fun will be had.

  Michelle shares her personal journey of discovering the joy and freedom of piecing without a pattern. She’ll walk you through her creative process, from the first hesitant stitches to the bold quilts incorporating swaths of negative space that followed. This lecture is all about exploration, choosing which rules to embrace, and finding fun in the unexpected twists of improv quilting.

  ● Learn an approach to improv piecing that can make the improv process seem less overwhelming by lessening decision fatigue.

  ● Explore a variety of variables you can play with to change the look of your wedge quilt.

  ● Learn how color placement choices affect the overall impact of dramatic lines formed in piecing.

  The Puzzle Workshop is a technique based workshop that covers:

  -improv puzzle piecing
   -fusible appliqué
   -spray basting
   -walking foot quilting
   -hanging triangles

  Students will learn a new approach to improv puzzle piecing and create a fabulous and fun, wonky looking contemporary/modern mini quilt.

  On day one, students will explore value, learn how to improv the puzzle piece and build their quilt top.

  On day two, students will apply their appliqué, learn straight line quilting with the walking foot and finish with glue basting your hanging triangles. This workshop provides a great space for exploring freedom of choice while creating a one-of-a-kind 20 inch square, contemporary/modern Puzzle Quilt.
